Such deeply wise advice Barney! I have gone down the road of licensing and it is definitely not a passive endeavor. It can be very stressful and take all your time and energy away from actually creating art. I have had a few good licenses deals that were worth the effort. But mostly it has been time and energy I wish I could get back because it went nowhere.

Thanks, Claudette. Your experience is exactly why I wrote the piece. Your Miss Fluff imagery seems like a perfect vehicle for licensing, yet you discovered that the promise was more elusive than it appeared. What looks good from afar can be quite different up close. Licensing can be lucrative, but not without cost—and never with a guarantee.

Thank you Barney! Yes, I found that even if you do your part , (creating sellable art artwork on time, sharing your existing audience, creating all the special formatted files and collateral they need for their products, etc.. ) If the licensee does not do their part - consistent , good quality production, shipping on time, good customer service etc.. it can all be effort for no return. In many instances I would have been so much happier keeping to myself .😁 I have several stories of major heartbreak with licensing. But I learned a lot and now am more careful who I team up with.

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your valuable experience. I'm sure other artists reading this will learn from it and it will help them make the best decisions about licensing.
